The Assistant Chief Minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, is representing Jersey at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool, which will draw to a close tomorrow (28 September 2016).
Jersey has committed to attend and participate in the annual conferences of all three of the main UK political parties. This is the fourth consecutive year that Jersey has been represented at the Labour conference. The conference is attended by hundreds of delegates and members from all parts of the Labour Party, including MPs, peers and members of the leadership. Also in attendance are leaders and workers from third-sector and charitable organisations, private sector companies, including financial services companies, think tanks and political organisations, as well as government representatives and ambassadors and high commissioners from the Commonwealth.
Senator Ozouf said “The United Kingdom has been our most important economic, political and constitutional partner, and we are committed to strengthening political relationships across all parties to secure our economic and trade interests.
“The UK’s decision earlier this year to leave the European Union means that it is more important than ever that time is spent engaging as broadly as possible with all UK politicians and policy-makers. This helps to ensure that Jersey’s trade interests are understood and will be considered in the many decisions faced by the UK parliament during the implementation of Brexit.
“Speaking with a range of MPs, MEPs and their advisers in recent days has allowed us to convey widely and clearly the message of Jersey’s positive contribution to the UK, to address any misconceptions and promote a better understanding of the Island.
“Such engagement ensures that we are well placed to work with our UK colleagues to address the shared challenges, and seize the opportunities, of the months and years ahead.”
