On 9th November, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, met with Fleur Anderson, Labour MP for Putney, who was born in Jersey. The meeting provided for a positive and productive discussion as part of the Government of Jersey’s wider programme of engagement with UK parliamentarians across the political spectrum, including those within the Labour Party.
A number of areas of mutual interest were discussed. These included the UK’s and Jersey’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and Jersey’s interests in the ongoing EU-UK Future Partnership negotiations and the UK’s third country trade negotiations. The Minister for External Relations also provided an outline of Jersey’s role as outward-looking jurisdiction in the areas of climate change, international development and diaspora engagement, noting in particular Jersey’s ambitious commitment to carbon neutrality by 2030 and the work of Jersey’s Overseas Aid in supporting vulnerable communities abroad.
The Government of Jersey will continue to work closely with Fleur Anderson MP, alongside other UK politicians in Government and in Opposition, to ensure an awareness of the Island’s ongoing work is maintained and that its interests continue to be addressed in Westminster in accordance with the UK Government’s constitutional responsibilities.
