On 18 June 2020, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, met with the new Shadow Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, the Rt Hon David Lammy MP, to congratulate him on his recent appointment and to reinforce the importance of the long-standing constitutional relationship between Jersey and the UK.
The meeting provided a valuable introductory discussion as part of Jersey’s positive and collaborative engagement with a broad spectrum of UK Parliamentarians, including those within the Labour Party. Areas covered included the shared objective to promote transparency and tackle financial crime through measures relating to ultimate beneficial ownership and tax, mutual challenges in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Island’s priorities in relation to the UK-EU future partnership negotiations, and the Island’s direct and indirect value to the UK’s economy and international profile.
The Government of Jersey will continue to work closely with the Shadow Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, alongside UK politicians in Government and in Opposition, to ensure that Jersey’s interests continue to be understood and addressed by the UK Government in accordance with the UK’s constitutional responsibilities.
