On 21 June Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, met with Simon Jupp, Conservative MP for East Devon and Vice Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Channel Islands Group (APPCIG). The meeting provided for a positive and productive discussion as part of the Government of Jersey’s wider programme of engagement with UK parliamentarians across the political spectrum, including those within the Conservative Party.
A number of areas of mutual interest were discussed. These included economic challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact of Flybe’s closure on the Channel Islands. Flybe was a Devon-headquartered company providing key transport links for students, business travellers and holiday makers alike. The Government of Jersey is working with other carriers to ensure that this regional connectivity is maintained despite the challenging circumstances for the travel sector. Other areas addressed included Jersey’s priorities and participation in the UK-EU Future Partnership negotiations, as well as Jersey’s role in building global partnerships through the furtherance of bilateral tax and investment cooperation with priority jurisdictions.
The Government of Jersey will continue to work closely with Simon Jupp MP, alongside other UK politicians in Government and in Opposition, to ensure that Jersey’s interests continue to be understood and addressed by the UK Government in accordance with the UK’s constitutional responsibilities.
