Minister for External Relations leads briefing session with the UK Justice Select Committee

July 8, 2020

On 2 July 2020, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, led a virtual briefing session with Members of the UK Justice Select Committee including Chair Sir Bob Neill MP (Con), Maria Eagle MP (Lab) and James Daly MP (Con). The Justice Select Committee is the formal scrutiny function within the UK Parliament responsible for reviewing the effectiveness of the constitutional and working relationships between the Crown Dependencies and the UK Government, the latter operating through the Ministry of Justice.

The positive and productive session represented a further example of Jersey’s long-standing and consistent engagement with the Committee, which has previously included a visit to the Island. Matters discussed included the representation of the Island’s interests and ongoing participation in the negotiations relating to the UK-EU Future Partnership and third country Free Trade Agreements, Jersey’s working relationships with UK Government departments, and the unique nature of the constitutional relationship between Jersey and the UK.

The Government of Jersey London Office will continue to work closely with the Committee to ensure the continuing functionality of the constitutional relationship between Jersey and the UK, and to protect and promote Jersey’s interests across Westminster and Whitehall for the benefit of all Islanders.
